"Pookie’s" Thai
Westlake
Cuisine
“Bangkok”
in the Basement
Pookie’s
Thai Westlake Cuisine
is located in a relatively unobtrusive office complex called
“The Water Court Plaza”
on Hampshire Road. Many
people think that this street is a continuation of Agoura Road. It isn’t.
Agoura actually becomes Hampshire west of Westlake Blvd. It then goes under
the freeway and ends at Thousand Oaks Blvd.
This entire office
structure is actually so anonymous that aside from the very confusing
address, few people are aware of a very pleasant lower level inside
courtyard that has flowing water, waterfalls and animal life…… and offices.
For
years, most businesses looking to rent space were also unaware. In fact it
has taken almost 20 years to eliminate all the vacancies. While the concept
was clever and original, it was so poorly marketed and priced that it went
into foreclosure and was taken over by the bank.
The bank then resold it
and it was rejuvenated by new owners. Then, the continued growth of Westlake
with continual demand for upscale office space finally produced full
occupancy but still little attention from the community. Did you know that
there are 2 restaurants down below?
There have been at least 7
restaurants that tried to exist on that hidden lower water level in those
two separate locations. 6 languished in that deadly anonymity and failed,
even though half of them were next to a live waterfall.
There have been upscale
and downscale Italian, Indian, French-Japanese Fusion, Buffet, Hip
American, Chicken and others buried down there. Only one has been able to
overcome that hidden in oblivion location. It has not only flourished
fabulously, it has recently expanded from its smaller location to a
dominating corner spot twice the size. Will wonders never cease !!! A new
Sushi Bar called Kumo Sushi
is now in the old location.
This one out of seven
success story as noted above, is obviously ….
Pookie’s Thai Westlake Cuisine.
And the reason for it's
success can be summed up in one word……
Pookie.
Pookie Ponyata, nee
the human Whirlwind of Westlake
was born
in
Bangkok
and she is one of the two most energetic, skilled, personable,
talented and cheerful restaurateurs in Ventura County. Period.
Just about every thing she
does is exactly right.
Paradoxically her business in the old location became so good that there
were complaints… with justification. The service had become somewhat slow,
especially at the extremely active takeout section with 15 minute waits
because of disorganization and basic mathematical incompetence. Those
crowded waits flowed into the small main dining room and made it somewhat
unpleasant.

Even Pookie could not be
everywhere. Though she often did try just that. She also somehow even
survived having a baby along the way. That is all now changed for the better in
this new...... expanded and sophisticated dining room.
This new location is
perhaps the most pleasing white table cloth restaurant
“for the
money” anywhere in Southern California. It is lovely.

You search the upper
parking lot at The Water Plaza on Hampshire for the sign indicating the
stairs to Pookies
Thai on the
lower level. You go down the stairs next to the waterfall and then
traverse the active water courtyard where you will see the glowing
restaurant on a mid corner. You may be greeted at the entrance by Pookie
or one of the authentic Thai servers. (a very good sign) Then you face a
full size “Golden” exotic Thai figure that is reminiscent of the
astounding 24 carat Golden Palace of The King of Siam in the heart of
Bangkok. |

Pookie Attracts the Beautiful Foodies
of Ventura County |
The walls and the lighting
are wonderfully low key and ½ the tables can gaze at the ducks and water
feature outside the windows. The sound level is low and encourages
conversation. Service the night we were there was satisfactory even though
the multi-faceted Pookie was in the kitchen cooking for a vacationing chef.
But…..when Pookie is
working the dining room, the service is amazing and her performance is very
entertaining theater. If you mention
FrankAboutFood.com, she may even find time to give you a true
Bangkok
back massage....in your seat.

The Only Designer Styled Thai Restaurant
North of the Santa Monica Mountains From Burbank to the Sea |
The food is clearly the
most sophisticated and varied Thai food in the county, while remarkably
served and priced. Siam Spring Rolls
are a light and palate pleasing bargain at $6.95. Fried Won Ton contains
ground chicken and shrimp for $5.95 or ask Pookie to choose a special
appetizer for you. That’s what we usually do and we have always been
surprised but never disappointed.
An absolute standout is
Pookie’s Andaman Sea Soup
containing fish, squid, mussels, shrimp, scallops and mushrooms with a touch
of galanga and lemon grass. At $13.95 a bowl, it serves 4 cups with some
seconds or is a complete main course for 2. Do the math.
There is classic
Pad Thai
at $8.95 and a choice of 5 wonderful and authentic
Curries
at $8.50. Choose your heat! Salads are healthy, large and wonderful. Each can
be a main course at $8.95 or split as an appetizer.
Yam Wood Sen is a pasta salad a la Thailand with silver noodles loaded
with shrimp, chicken, celery, tomato and onion with roast chili paste and
lime juice at $8.95.
Then there are other
serious Asian influenced main courses of beef, chicken or pork most priced
well under $10. Chao Nam
Combo
is a wonder of sautéed fish, shrimp, scallops, mussels and clams with chili,
onion, garlic and basil. It leads the way for upscale crustacean dishes that
are priced at a remarkable $15 …..or less.
Desserts change at
Pookie's whim and are all very different and interesting.
Lunches served with
steamed rice and salad are $6.95. Takeout from the complete menu is delivered
free within 3 miles.
Pookie’s Thai is open an
astounding 7 days a week from 11:30 AM to late evening. When did she find
the time to have that baby? Did she actually take the day off?

Frankly Noted
For the first time since that popularity contest
called Zagat's has been published, 6 of the 12 very worthy
Conejo restaurants have
finally been recognized with listings in the Los Angeles
Edition. There are still at least 6 to go. Ask me.
In the present case, local credit is due to the management
skills of the owners combined with talented chefs. There is Tuscany,
justifiably,
rated as one of the best in all California within the crowded and highly competitive Italian category. Owner
Tomasso Barletta of Bari and Executive Chef Maurizio Ronzoni
from Lake Como deserve kudos for that.
Then there is Leila's, unbelievably,
perhaps,
rated equal (???) to Spago's for California Cuisine.
Give credit to the very
capable and amiable owner Peyman Afshar for that, and for keeping the
manic but brilliant chef Richie De Mane happy, super creative and
healthy. Just
watching Richie in the small open kitchen is worth the price of admission.
There is the super cool owner- manager Tom
Sweet partnering with veteran Chef Nick Blinoff to offer consistently
satisfying Mediterranean cuisine at the very attractive Mandevilla.
Cafe 14, also serving
sophisticated California Fusion in Agoura has now
made the list with the kitchen manned by a very competent espoused owner chef team of
Claudine and Neil Kramer. See our review on this personable pair in
our "Second Chances Feature."

If you just did the math, you
only came up with 4 rather than six. But remember that the recently arrived
Mastro's and Brent's had previous accreditation.
With the recent additions. We now have many more
fine restaurants in this extended Conejo area than the entire San Fernando
Valley, all of Orange County and San Diego County and are closing in
on the very large Westside area of Los Angeles from La Brea to the
Sea.
In California now it
is San Francisco, West Los Angeles, The Conejo Valley with downtown Los Angeles
trailing as a distant fourth with the exception of Chinatown. Santa Barbara has moved up and down.
Citronelle is gone and the Wine Cask is overrated.
Further a broad
spectrum exists here with amazing excellence in Japanese-Sushi, Italian, Pizza,
French, Chinese (on the outskirts), Sea Food, Steak (now), Fusion,
Californian, Continental, Deli (now) and perhaps 2 or 3 fairly good
Mexican Choices. At least 15 great choices in all.
